Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

The North Coast region has a proportionally large number of residents that identify as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander compared to the rest of NSW.

Generally, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are more likely to:

  • Experience lower levels of access to health services
  • Experience chronic disease
  • Be hospitalised
  • Experience disability and reduced quality of life due to ill health
  • Die at a younger age
  • Suffer a higher burden of emotional distress and possible mental illness

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health is a priority of many healthy services across the North Coast region.
