The North Coast region has a proportionally large number of residents that identify as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander compared to the rest of NSW.
Generally, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are more likely to:
- Experience lower levels of access to health services
- Experience chronic disease
- Be hospitalised
- Experience disability and reduced quality of life due to ill health
- Die at a younger age
- Suffer a higher burden of emotional distress and possible mental illness
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health is a priority of many healthy services across the North Coast region.
