When you need urgent medical attention after hours, who should you call?
Your regular General Practitioner (GP) should always be your first point of contact if you need urgent medical attention and it is a non-life-threatening emergency. Some GPs offer urgent after hours care. We encourage you to be informed about your GP’s after hours arrangements.
A list of General Practices that offer after hours care services on the NSW North Coast is available here.
Medical advice is also available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by calling Healthdirect Australia on 1800 022 222. This service should be used in the first instance if there are no after hours GP services available in your local area.
Calls to Healthdirect will be answered by a registered nurse who will assess your condition, and provide information and advice. If needed you will be connected to an on-call GP who will advise whether urgent medical attention is needed and direct you to the closest local after hours health service facility.
For life-threatening medical emergencies, call 000 (triple zero) immediately. Emergency medical care is available 24/7 at most hospitals.
Some pharmacies are open extended hours if you need medicine late at night or help with management of minor illnesses.
